Roppongi Complete Guide: Art Museums, Nightlife & Hidden Gems in Tokyo (2025)
World-class art at Mori Art Museum, late-night dining, and Tokyo Tower views over the city
Roppongi is one of Tokyo's most multifaceted neighborhoods — known internationally for its nightlife, but increasingly celebrated for world-class art museums, excellent dining, and a vibrant international community.
Getting to Roppongi
- Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line — Roppongi Station (direct from Ginza, Ueno, Akihabara)
- Toei Oedo Line — Roppongi Station (from Shinjuku, Shiodome, Asakusa)
From Shibuya: ~15 min by taxi. From Shinjuku: ~20 min by Oedo Line. From Ginza: ~10 min by Hibiya Line.
Roppongi Art Triangle
Roppongi is home to three world-class art institutions within walking distance of each other.
Mori Art Museum
On the 53rd floor of Mori Tower, this contemporary art museum hosts ambitious international exhibitions. Open until 10pm (midnight Fri–Sat) — Tokyo's best late-night cultural experience.
- Hours: 10am–10pm (Fri–Sat until midnight)
- Admission: ¥2,000 (includes Tokyo City View observation deck)
National Art Center Tokyo
Japan's largest exhibition space with an undulating glass facade by Kisho Kurokawa. No permanent collection — hosts major blockbuster touring shows. Free to enter the building.
- Hours: 10am–6pm (Fri until 8pm), closed Tuesday
- Admission: ¥500–¥2,000 depending on exhibition
- Tip: Brasserie Paul Bocuse inside has outstanding prix-fixe lunches
Suntory Museum of Art
In Tokyo Midtown, focusing on traditional Japanese arts — ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, glass. Often overlooked but deeply rewarding.
- Hours: 10am–6pm (Fri–Sat until 8pm), closed Tuesday
- Admission: ¥1,000–¥1,500
Tokyo Midtown & Roppongi Hills
Tokyo Midtown houses the Suntory Museum, luxury retail, and the beautiful 40,000 sqm Midtown Garden. The Christmas illuminations here are among Tokyo's best. Fujifilm Square photography gallery is free.
Roppongi Hills centers on Mori Tower with high-end retail, the Mohri Garden, and Tokyo City View deck. Louise Bourgeois's giant spider "Maman" at the tower base is one of Tokyo's most photographed artworks.
Roppongi Nightlife
Roppongi has been Tokyo's most international nightlife district for decades. The scene has evolved toward quality bars and lounges, but the energy after midnight remains distinctive.
Best Bars & Clubs
- SuperDeluxe — underground venue for art, music, and experimental events
- Bar Martha — sophisticated jazz bar with excellent cocktails
- Mado Lounge (52F Mori Tower) — sleek bar with panoramic Tokyo views
- Gonpachi — the restaurant that inspired the Kill Bill fight scene; great yakitori
- Don Quijote (24hr) — the 3am Roppongi institution
Nightlife Tips
- Clubs peak 2–4am; cover charges ¥1,500–¥3,000 (usually includes a drink)
- Ignore the touts around Roppongi Crossing
- Last trains: Hibiya Line ~12:30am, Oedo Line ~12:00am
